Clergy of St. Matthew's / Sts. Matthew & Mark
Mission Chapel of St. John's, Barrington (1891-1924)
St. Matthew's Chapel was founded in 1891 as a mission of St. John's Episcopal Church, Barrington, and consecrated in 1911. The key figure in the founding was the Rev. William M. Chapin, Rector of St. John's, who conducted services at St. Matthew's until his retirement in 1920, followed by Charles Barker Scoville (1920-1921) and Frederick Washburn Sandford (1922-1924).
Mission Parish of the Diocese (1924-1959)
As a mission parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, St. Matthew's was sometimes served by its own Vicars. At other times, the Rectors of neighboring churches, including St. John's, Barrington, St. Mark's, Warren, and St. Mark's, Riverside, served as Ministers-in-Charge, in addition to their duties in their home parishes. They were often assisted by Lay Readers who officiated at Sunday Morning Prayer. (The historic association of St. Matthew's with both St. Mark's Churches thus long predates the mergers of 2010-2012.) A partial list of these clergy follows:
