Funerals
At the time of death, the clergy and parish community of Saints Matthew and Mark desire to offer the greatest possible support and comfort to the bereaved.
When a Church member is dying, please contact the clergy, so that pastoral care may be offered, and the “Last Rites” administered as appropriate. Calls for this purpose can be made at any time of the day or night. At the time of death, it is courteous to contact the clergy directly to begin making the funeral arrangements, rather than rely on the funeral home to do so.
Funerals of Church members ideally take place in the church, in the presence of the body or ashes, prior to the Committal at the place of interment. Funerals of active communicants should include the Holy Eucharist if possible. Church funerals always follow the form and directions in The Book of Common Prayer.
During the funeral service, the officiant will offer a homily commending the Christian hope of resurrection from the dead. At the beginning of the service, selected family members or friends may be invited to offer brief personal reminiscences.
In planning the funeral, the clergy will meet with the family to get to know them, understand their needs, explain the Church’s funeral customs as necessary, and craft a service of suitable dignity and beauty commending the departed to the care and safekeeping of Almighty God.
